Complete, Automated Closed-Loop Metal Powder Filling, Storage, and Recovery

For High Volume Additive Manufacturing

Volkmann pioneered the design and manufacture of fully automated metal powder handling systems for 3D printing. These customized, closed loop systems automatically transfer the metallic powders from storage to the printers through enclosed piping then extract excess or depowder unused material from the build box, sieve the material to remove agglomerated particles, and return it to storage for future reuse or transfer it to the 3D printer mixed with virgin material for immediate reuse.

The fully automatic, fully enclosed approach protects the valuable metal powder from contamination, helps maintain proper moisture content, and protects staffers from contact with the toxic materials. The metal powder conveyors are explosion-proof by design and ATEX-certified documenting their safety.

IDAM Project:
Volkmann Partners with BMW, GKN for 3D Printing Innovation

Volkmann devised, developed, and applied the latest concepts in metal additive manufacturing to actual 3D printing production lines with global colleagues BMW and GKN. The Industrialization and Digitalization of Additive Manufacturing project (IDAM) research project is a digitally networked, fully automated 3D printing production line for automotive component production funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Under the leadership of the BMW Group, Volkmann joined 11 other leading companies and research institutes in conducting successful practical trials at BMW AG (Munich, Germany) and at GKN Additive (Bonn, Germany).

At BMW, Volkmann developed and built a central powder recycling station to prepare excess or unused metal powder for reuse then mix it with virgin powder and return it to the 3D printer. At GKN, a Volkmann PowTReX system performed the metal powder extraction, recycling, and return for printing.

What a Year for Metal Additive Manufacturing!

At Volkmann, we expanded our AM product line with the introduction of a slate of automated equipment for metal powder handling, transfer, and reprocessing. We installed several fully integrated, closed loop systems that make the process move faster and safer with greater consistency and higher volumes yet at lower operating costs.

Here’s a look at how the world’s top 3D printing companies use our metal powder handling equipment when they’re ready to scale up to mass production.
